DESCRIPTION

Northern Vietnam has no shortage of spectacular roads. What makes this journey special is how we ride them.

Over thirteen days we travel through the remote mountains of Vietnam's far north, following quiet backroads that weave between limestone peaks, terraced hillsides, deep valleys and ethnic minority villages near the Chinese border.

This is not a mileage-focused tour, nor a race from one landmark to the next. We stop often, take the scenic route whenever possible and leave room for the unexpected moments that often become the highlight of a journey.

The route takes us through the dramatic landscapes of Cao Bang, Ban Gioc, Ba Be Lake and the legendary mountain roads of Ha Giang. Expect endless corners, towering karst mountains, remote villages, colourful markets and some of the finest riding roads in Southeast Asia.

Like all ADA journeys, this tour is as much about the people, places and stories collected along the way as it is about the riding itself.

If you enjoy the journey as much as the destination, you'll feel right at home.

Medicines. Don’t forget your personal medicines. Some painkillers and medicines against travellers-diarrhoea are recommended to bring.

    ROAD TRAVEL WITHIN VIETNAM

Vietnam has an extensive road infrastructure including national roads and secondary roads. Most roads are in good condition, but there are a few exceptions, with some great gravel roads/tracks for our off-road experience yeahhh!

Traffic. In Vietnam the traffic is on the right-hand side and chaotic, especially in bigger cites/towns like Hanoi. But when driving slow, accidents are less likely to happen. On the main roads buses and trucks are on top of the hierarchy and take over whenever they feel like it. This can be in curves or wherever. Stay cautious and 'always expect the unexpected!'

Speed limits. Keep an eye out for the designated speed limit as these may vary depending on road conditions and law enforcement does take place next to the road.

Driver’s license: You must have a valid driver’s license issued in your own country.

International Drivers license. It is mandatory you carry an official translation of your license / an international driving license. You should always have your driver’s license with you when you are driving, as you will be asked to produce it if you are pulled over for any reason.

Fuel: Fuel is included in the tour price and we will refuel with the whole group.

    Itinerary and Map

    DAY 1 – 22 FEB | ARRIVAL IN HANOI

Arrive into Hanoi and transfer to the hotel.

The day is yours to rest, recover from your flight and explore the city at your own pace. Hanoi's Old Quarter is a fascinating place to wander on foot, with narrow streets, local markets, street food stalls and a constant flow of scooters creating the soundtrack of daily life.

In the evening we meet for a welcome dinner, trip briefing and introductions before the ride begins.

    DAY 2 – 23 FEB | HANOI EXPLORATION DAY

Today we explore Hanoi aboard US Army Jeeps, visiting both the city's iconic landmarks and hidden corners. From the Old Quarter to local neighbourhoods, markets and lakes, this is an excellent introduction to Vietnam before the ride begins.

    Overnight: Hanoi

    DAY 3 – 24 FEB | HANOI TO THAT KHE | 220 KM

We leave Hanoi behind and head north into the Vietnamese countryside.

The traffic gradually fades as we trade highways for quiet secondary roads winding through villages, rice fields and rolling hills. Throughout the day the landscape slowly transitions from lowland farmland to increasingly dramatic mountain scenery near the Chinese border.

By late afternoon we arrive in the remote border town of That Khe.

    Overnight: That Khe

DAY 4 – 25 FEB | THAT KHE TO QUANG UYEN VIA BAN GIOC WATERFALL | 150 KM

Today delivers one of the highlights of the journey.

The roads weave through a landscape of towering limestone karsts rising above emerald valleys and rice fields. Often described as "Ha Long Bay on land", this region offers some of the most beautiful scenery in Vietnam.

We continue to Ban Gioc Waterfall on the Chinese border before riding deeper into the mountains toward Quang Uyen.

    Overnight: Quang Uyen

    DAY 5 – 26 FEB | QUANG UYEN TO CAO BANG | 135 KM

A day dedicated to hidden roads and border country.

We spend the day exploring quiet valleys, mountain villages and little-travelled roads close to the Chinese frontier. Along the way we visit Pac Bo, where Ho Chi Minh established his revolutionary headquarters during Vietnam's struggle for independence.

A relaxed afternoon ride brings us into Cao Bang.

    Overnight: Cao Bang

DAY 6 – 27 FEB | CAO BANG TO BA BE LAKE NATIONAL PARK | 120 KM

The mountains continue as we ride south-west through forests and remote countryside.

After lunch we leave the motorcycles behind and transfer onto boats for a journey through caves, jungle-lined waterways and into Ba Be Lake National Park.

Surrounded by limestone mountains and dense forest, Ba Be is one of Vietnam's most beautiful natural areas. There is time to swim, relax and enjoy the slower pace of life.

    Overnight: Traditional Homestay

DAY 7 – 28 FEB | BA BE LAKE TO KHUOI KHON VILLAGE| 110 KM

Today marks our entry into the legendary Ha Giang region.

The roads become narrower, steeper and increasingly dramatic as we climb through remote valleys and mountain settlements. Black limestone peaks dominate the horizon while ethnic minority villages appear around every corner.

By evening we arrive in the Lo Lo village of Khuoi Khon.

    Overnight: Traditional Homestay

    DAY 8 – 1 MAR | KHUOI KHON TO DONG VAN | 220 KM

One of the best riding days of the entire journey.

We ride through the heart of the Ha Giang Plateau Geopark, a landscape of towering limestone mountains, deep valleys and endless winding roads.

The scenery is relentless. Every pass reveals another valley, every corner another mountain range stretching into the distance.

This is the Vietnam most riders come searching for.

    Overnight: Dong Van

    DAY 9 – 2 MAR | DONG VAN TO HA GIANG | 150 KM

An early start takes us toward the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass.

Often considered the most spectacular road in Vietnam, the route clings to the mountainside high above deep river valleys with panoramic views stretching toward China.

We take our time here before continuing through the mountains and visiting the historic H'mong King's Palace.

The afternoon ride carries us south toward Ha Giang.

    Overnight: Ha Giang

    DAY 10 – 3 MAR | HA GIANG TO PAN HOU | 110 KM

Leaving the main roads behind once again, we climb into the mountains of Hoang Su Phi.

This region is famous for its spectacular rice terraces, remote hill tribe communities and winding mountain roads. Traffic is almost non-existent and the scenery feels a world away from modern Vietnam.

We spend the night in the peaceful mountain retreat of Pan Hou.

    Overnight: Pan Hou

    DAY 11 – 4 MAR | PAN HOU TO XIN MAN | 120 KM

A day of remote mountain riding near the Chinese border.

The roads become rougher and more adventurous as we cross isolated valleys and high passes. Flower H'mong communities, colourful traditional clothing and huge mountain views define the day.

This is Vietnam at its most authentic.

    Overnight: Xin Man

    DAY 12 – 5 MAR | XIN MAN TO LAO CAI | 130 KM

Our final riding day takes us through forests, mountain villages and border-country scenery toward Lao Cai.

We take our time, stopping often for coffee, photographs and one last opportunity to soak in the scenery before the ride comes to an end.

After arriving in Lao Cai, we prepare the motorcycles and board the overnight sleeper train back to Hanoi.

    Overnight: Sleeper Train

    DAY 13 – 6 MAR | HANOI DEPARTURE | FLY HOME

Arrive back in Hanoi in the morning.

Transfer to the hotel or airport depending on your onward travel plans.
